Dear Major Dugard,
It has taken, I am afraid, rather longer to decide the future of the Hong Kong University than was anticipated when Sir Arthur Dawe wrote to you some two years ago to thank you for your offer to present to the University the gold trowel with which your brother laid the foundation stone. AS
As you may already know, it has now been decided that immediate steps should be taken to restore the University to its pre-war standard and the work of the reconstruction is proceeding.
The gold trowel is at present in safe custody in Hong Kong and the Governor tells us that the intention is to present it formally to the University on a suitable occasion such as the opening of a new University building, os for example the new Engineering laboratory which will probably be ready for opening some time next year.
The Governor has asked us to inform you of the position.
Yours sim erely,
(Signed) J. J. PASKIN...
MAJOR E.J. LUGARD.
